first_img Tweet Over 1,700 locals with backyard gardens have registered to grow their own food with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and National Food Security which says distribution of seedlings will be ramped up in the coming week.The Ministry of Agriculture and the Blue and Green Economy included backyard gardens in its recently unveiled Coronavirus Food Security Programme.This initiative, guided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health and Wellness concentrates on food productionto prepare, mitigate and respond to and recover from the COVID19 pandemic with special emphasis on national food security.The programe began with large farmers but is now looking to put fresh nutritious produce closer to homes.Dr Al-Mario Casimir of the agriculture division says registration is still open and, in the meantime, “Our distribution days will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays…exclusively through the Division of Agriculture’s Extension staff.”Casimir confirms that currently, the Division is contacting those who have registered to determine “time, convenience and location for delivery of seedlings.The master list of registrants has been divided by agricultural region.“The regional teams are now going through the names and making that one-on-one contract via telephone to inform participants of our readiness to distribute their seedlings,” Casimir explained.He reiterates that this exercise is not meant for profit but to promote farm to table and balanced nutrition.Essential crops like corn, beans and sweet potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, pumpkin, cucumbers, cabbage, sweet peppers, and pumpkin are being propagated at greenhouses across the island.The numbers to call to indicate interest are: 611-3125,  611-3126, 611-3645 or  611-3455.Or complete the form from the Ministry of Agriculture’s Facebook page.Casimir wants the public to know that upon successful submission of the application form, a message confirming their sign-up will say ‘Thank you for participating…” 824 Views   no discussions LifestyleLocalNews Backyard Farming Programme: Registration Still Open While Distribution Continues by: – April 22, 2020 Sharing is caring!center_img Share Share Sharelast_img
