The Who Retiring From Touring After 50th Anniversary Tour

Posted On Mar 3 2021 by

first_imgPete Townshend told London’s Evening Standard that The Who will be retiring from the road after their 50th anniversary tour.“For the 50th anniversary we’ll tour the world. It’ll be the last big one for us. There are still places we’ve not played. It would be good to go to eastern Europe and places that haven’t heard us play all the old hits.” Said Townshend in an interview. He and other surviving member Roger Daltrey will be working on solo tracks in the meantime, but will be celebrating The Who with their 50th Anniversary tour in 2015.[via Jambase and ContactMusic]last_img read more

Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood To Drop Their Free-Jazz Funk At Terminal 5, 12/11

Posted On Mar 3 2021 by

first_imgMedeski Martin and Wood recently released their fourth album (one live and three studio albums) with longtime collaborator John Scofield, titled Juice. The album is a collection of free jazz tunes, including some instrumental renditions of classic rock favorites like “Light My Fire” by The Doors, “The Times They Are A-Changin” by Bob Dylan and “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream. The instrumentals are loose, inspired by the original tunes, but given that MSMW funky groovy twist like none other. Now, they’re bringing that Juice sound to NYC on December 11th, for one funk-fusion-filled night at Terminal 5!Scofield first partnered with MMW on the 1998 album A Go Go, a jazz-funk inspired instrumental album complete with 10 original Scofield compositions. Medeski Martin and Wood took the lead on the 2006 release, Out Louder, the first to be released under the “Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood” moniker. While A Go Go featured more structured compositions, Out Louder was an experimental attempt at spontaneous co-composition. With four virtuostic musicians, that experiment was naturally successful. While the four musicians have played together intermittently, Juice marks the absolute fusion between Scofield’s jazz-funk and MMW’s avant-garde-jazz approaches. The common ground are African and Latin influences, blended into the shuffling riffs of American rock music, and the result is wholly compelling music.Read the L4LM review of Juice here. Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood will be performing at Terminal 5 on December 11th! Tickets are on-sale now!last_img read more

The Day The Music Died: Board Considers Reopening Investigation Into 1959 Plane Crash

Posted On Mar 3 2021 by

first_img“The Day The Music Died,” a phrase from Don McLean’s hit song “American Pie,” is thought to refer to the infamous 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. Interestingly, the National Transportation Safety Board is considering revisiting the investigation into that plane crash, now 56 years old. Here’s the initial report filed by the NTSB.The crash was considered a “pilot error” at first, but a letter from an experienced pilot suggested that a number of other factors should have been considered in the initial investigation. Those factors include weight calculations, balance calculations, fuel gauge readings and a rudder. It will probably be at least a year before the NTSB decides to look into the case.Until then, watch a video of a Buddy Holly song made popular by the Grateful Dead:[Via NTSB Blog]last_img read more

Trey Anastasio’s Incredibly Prolific Year At Age 50

Posted On Mar 3 2021 by

first_imgPhish guitarist and Jedi Knight Trey Anastasio turns 51 years old today. An icon for many a jam band fan, “Big Red” has been slaying crowds since the early 80s with his undeniable chops, imaginative story-telling, and an indulgence for improvisation that has produced too many sparkling memories to count.Like a fine wine, Anastasio seems to only be getting better with age. Anastasio’s 50th year on this earth produced some of his greatest feats to date, propelling Phish into a new stratosphere. Take a look back at Anastasio’s year in review:Just The Jams From Phish’s Magnaball FestivalHalloween’s Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted HouseBreaking from tradition (again) at last year’s Halloween run in Las Vegas, Phish decided to don Disney’s 1964 album Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House as their Musical Costume, bringing to life a record full of mere sound bites. The band masterfully crafted an entire set of new music and an entire crop of new jams out of thin air practically. Not to mention they dressed up the stage as a graveyard complete with zombies and ghouls. What other band would or could possibly do this? Answer: none. This is one of the foremost landmarks of the Phish 3.0 era.2014-2015 New Year’s Run In MiamiNo year is complete without a Phish New Year’s run, and last year the Vermont Four returned to Miami, FL for the first time since 2009 to ring it in. They did not disappoint, delighting phans with a three-night run that incorporated some of the new material from Halloween, including a “Martian Monster” second set closer on 12/31 and a version of “The Dogs” that emerged out of “Auld Lang Syne.” Check out all of set three from New Years Eve, which included a hilarious “Suck to Blow” sketch with drummer Jon Fishman to kick off some excellent jamming.Phish’s New Archival Release To Feature Bluegrass Tunes, 30-Minute ‘Funky Bitch’The Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well ShowsWhen Anastasio was tapped by the Core Four of the Grateful Dead in early 2015 to assume the Jerry Garcia lead guitar role for a run of shows in Santa Clara, CA and Chicago, IL, there were many different schools of thought as to how Anatasio would live up to the challenge. Come the end of the run, there were no doubters. Anastasio proved them wrong, displaying a great deal of musicianship and respect to the legacy of Garcia and the Dead. Never overpowering the jam, Anastasio allowed the music to play him through these five shows, cementing his spot as one the generation’s all-time greats. Check out Red playing this classic combo of the Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire On The Mountain” from Fare Thee Well in Chicago:2015 Summer TourWhat else can be said about Phish’s 2015 summer tour other than “Wow!?” Beginning their assault on the West coast with stops at venues like the Shoreline Amphitheatre and The Forum, the band made their way into pockets of the South, playing two nights in Texas and a handful of dates in the heart of Dixie before turning northward to the Midwest and then to their home base in the Northeast, putting on their 10th festival, Magnaball, and finally wrapping up the tour with their annual Dick’s run in Colorado. The jams were magnificent, the energy palpable, and the antics reminiscent of old times. A tour like this reminds you why you listen and follow this band on a night-to-night basis. You simply never know what you’re going to get. And that’s half the fun. Check out this epic version of “Tweezer” > “Prince Caspian” from Magnaball:Trey Anastasio And The Dude of Life Are Working On New MusicA New Album & Fall Tour With TABIf there’s one thing we’ve learned about Anastasio over the course of his career, it’s that he likes to stay busy. Whether it be playing with the Trey Anastasio Band, his run of shows with different American symphonies from a few years ago, or the writing of musical to be performed on Broadway, Anastasio is a fiend for work. And that’s how we like it! Big Red has a new album out this October 30th, Paper Wheels, featuring new material that was played with TAB last fall/winter. Check out “The Song”, a track from Paper Wheels that was released earlier this month. There you have it, easily one of the most prolific 50th years ever. Between learning Grateful Dead material and writing new Phish and Trey Anastasio Band songs, the guitarist never fails to press musical boundaries.Anastasio already looks to have a busy 51st, with a TAB tour that features stops at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre, a Halloween run at the Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas, and more, not to mention four Phish shows at Madison Square Garden to celebrate New Years Eve and the band’s first-ever trip to Mexico. No matter where you look, you’ll be seeing Big Red!last_img read more

David Bowie’s Family Shares Appreciation For ‘Love And Support’ In Public Statement

Posted On Mar 3 2021 by

first_imgThe music community was hit hard recently, as the life of the legendary David Bowie came to an end last Sunday, January 10th. Bowie had been battling cancer for 18 months, and died just two days after his final album, Blackstar, was released. In the passing days since Bowie’s death, nearly every musician and personality has paid their respects in some form. As such, Bowie’s family has released a statement showing their appreciation, encouraging “everyone’s celebration of his life as they see fit.”Read the statement, published on Facebook, below:THANK YOUThe family of David Bowie is currently making arrangements for a private ceremony celebrating the memory of their beloved husband, father and friend. They ask once again that their privacy be respected at this most sensitive of times. We are overwhelmed by and grateful for the love and support shown throughout the world. However, it is important to note that while the concerts and tributes planned for the coming weeks are all welcome, none are official memorials organized or endorsed by the family.Just as each and every one of us found something unique in David’s music, we welcome everyone’s celebration of his life as they see fit.last_img read more

Harvard wins Cambridge Go Green Award for Blackstone project

Posted On Mar 2 2021 by

first_imgHarvard University has been awarded a city of Cambridge Go Green Business Award, which recognizes business and institutional leaders for their efforts to create a more sustainable city. The award, in the energy category for a large organization, was given to University Operations Services (UOS) for the 46 Blackstone St. project, a 44,000-square-foot project that converted former industrial space — and a brownfield site — into office space. The project, completed in May 2006, has received a platinum certification — the highest possible and the first at Harvard — from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Its green features include ground-source heat pumps for cooling the building; features that reduce summer energy use 42 percent below code; and features that reduce water use by 43 percent. It includes conversion of a former parking lot to green space, use of environmentally responsible materials, drought-tolerant plants, and metering equipment to monitor the building’s energy efficiency. Recycling and reuse of construction debris from the renovation resulted in more than 99 percent of construction waste diverted from landfills.Thomas Vautin, UOS associate vice president for facilities and environmental services, said the Blackstone project is a valuable example that shows what’s possible when sustainability is incorporated into project design.“The Blackstone office renovation project has been a truly valuable learning experience for us,” Vautin said. “It illustrates that it is possible to perform major renovations of an historic structure to create high performance and a wonderful work environment — all in a very cost-effective way.”The award, to be given at today’s (May 17) ceremony at the City Hall annex, is the second in three years for Harvard. Harvard’s Green Campus Initiative won a Go Green Business Award in 2004 for its efforts to spur energy conservation, energy-efficient purchasing, and green-power purchasing on campus.last_img read more
