BCCI strives hard to broker peace as Shah Rukh Khan remains unapologetic, MCA adamant

Posted On Nov 28 2019 by

first_imgThe Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has imposed a five year ban on Shah Rukh Khan for allegedly misbehaving with and abusing their officials. However, even as Khan remains unapologetic, the MCA is now also facing the opposition from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the decision to ban the actor from stepping on foot in the Wankhede stadium for five years.Even as a back channel solution is underway, both bodies are now going louder over the “ownership” on the ground.Taking strong cognizance of his unruly behaviour with the officials of the association as well as the security guards posted on the ground, who were preventing him from violating its rules, the MCA announced its ban on the actor for five years from stepping into Wankhede stadium. However, even though “unanimous” decision was announced by the MCA president Vilasrao Deshmukh in a press conference, the MCA’s action has not gone down too well with the BCCI. Sources say that the BCCI, which owns the stadium, has not assented to the MCA’s ban.A senior BCCI official says, “The MCA Managing Committee may have made the decision in its meeting based on their version of the events on Wednesday night and we understand that the tempers are flying high on both sides. However, the fact is that every IPL franchise has to pay for the use of the ground and the stadia and such issues cannot be blown out of proportion. We are looking into the matter before deciding if Shahrukh indeed crossed the line or not.”advertisementMeanwhile, the MCA, which administers the Wankhede stadium like all other cricket grounds in Mumbai is standing firm on its decision. In fact, in a conversation with Mail Today, Union Minister Deshmukh, who chaired the meeting which banned Shahrukh said that it was Shahrukh’s unapologetic attitude that forced them to take this decision.Deshmukh told Mail Today over the phone, “More than half of our officials were there witnessing (the brawl) and if his children were manhandled then he should have at least given a complaint against us (MCA). Why is it that we have made the first complaint? More than that, he has been very disrespectful of the association and I have to believe my officers about what happened there.”The MCA believes that the ban on Shahrukh is a message to anyone that highhandedness will not be taken kindly.Deshmukh told Mail Today, “It was a unanimous decision as this is important to correct misbehaviour and disregard for rules. And Shahrukh did not have an accreditation to be there but also abused our officers.”When asked if the MCA would reconsider its decision in case Shahrukh extends an olive branch, Deshmukh remained non-committal but said, “Since yesterday we have seen his stand and he does not seem to be (in the mood) for anything like that. As of now, our committee’s decision is final and we will not tolerate such behaviour from anyone.”But the BCCI bosses are working overtime through backchannels to broker peace between the MCA and Shahrukh. An official says, “The MCA has told us about its proposed ban but it cannot be accepted in its current form. Moreover, they are administrators of the ground but ultimately the IPL is the BCCI’s league as much as the stadium is the BCCI’s. We are trying to figure out a way to end this stalemate and hopefully something will come through to see peace before the next match KKR plays.”Mumbai will be witness to another IPL match only next season but it clearly seems like the BCCI and the MCA are headed for a head-on collision over the proprietorship of the stadium in question.last_img read more

Lauritzen Secures New Financing

Posted On Oct 23 2019 by

first_imgzoom Danish shipping company J. Lauritzen Group has agreed upon main terms for a new financing package from banks and its owner, Lauritzen Fonden. With the new financing package, the firm intends to improve the capital structure and ensure the continuing financing in 2017. In addition, J. Lauritzen plans to meet its obligations and comply with loan agreement covenants.”In early 2017, a number of organisational and cost adjustments were implemented in order to improve our competitive position, and main terms for a new financing package were agreed with our core lenders,” Mads P. Zacho, J.Lauritzen’s CEO, said.“These initiatives follow a very tough year for global shipping where dry cargo markets fell to historic lows in February 2016 and where the serious market decline for large gas carriers was increasingly felt in the segments for smaller gas carriers,” Zacho added. The main terms of the financing include capital injection from Lauritzen Fonden, modification of the repayment schedule and amendments to existing loan facilities’ covenants. As part of the financing package, the firm said that a bond issue of around USD 20 million will be used to repay debt in exchange for extension of the maturity on the loan from October 2017 to October 2021.The financing package needs to be supported by lenders and approved by bondholders. The announcement comes on the back of the company’s results for 2016 which show that J. Lauritzen suffered a loss of USD 45.6 million in 2016, considerably trimmed from a loss of USD 313.4 million posted in 2015 amid catastrophic year for dry bulk shipping. In January 2017, prompted by the ongoing market weakness, the company carried out cost reductions and organisational changes, which when fully implemented by the end of 2017 will result in the redundancy of around 15% of the land-based workforce. In its outlook for 2017, the company said it expects another challenging year for its businesses. The company expects EBITDA to be within the range of USD 40 million loss, “which is better than in 2016, however not satisfactory.”Depreciation and special items are expected to be at levels similar to 2016.last_img read more

‘London, Dublin bid to restore N Ireland govt’

Posted On Oct 12 2019 by

first_imgBelfast: London and Dublin were set to announce a fresh attempt to revive Northern Ireland’s power-sharing devolved administration, reports said Friday, following the killing of a journalist by nationalist paramilitaries. Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, has been without its semi-autonomous government since January 2017 following a breakdown in trust between the main parties. In a rare joint statement, politicians from Northern Ireland’s six biggest parties united to condemn the killing of 29-year-old Lyra McKee, shot dead on April 18 while reporting on riots in the second city of Londonderry. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from USHer death has triggered a renewed attempt to mend the fences between the main parties representing the British unionist and Irish nationalist communities. The New IRA (Irish Republican Army) paramilitary splinter group, which violently opposes the peace process in Northern Ireland, admitted responsibility for McKee’s killing, saying she was unintentionally shot as they attacked “enemy” police officers. At her funeral on Wednesday, Father Martin Magill commended Northern Ireland’s political leaders for joining together at her funeral, but asked, to a standing ovation: “Why in God’s name does it take the death of a 29-year-old woman with her whole life in front of her to get us to this point?'” It is expected that the talks could take place following the May 2 local elections in Northern Ireland. Britain’s N Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley and Ireland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney are expected to hold a press conference later on Friday in Belfast. The two largest parties, the pro-British Democratic Unionists and Irish republican Sinn Fein, are at loggerheads over several issues.last_img read more

An American Will Play For The World Chess Championship

Posted On Sep 28 2019 by

For the first time since Bobby Fischer captivated the country, a U.S. grandmaster has a shot at becoming the undisputed world chess champion.1In 1996, American Gata Kamsky played in the finals of the FIDE world championship (and lost), but the world championship was divided because Garry Kasparov, the world’s strongest player, had split from FIDE and played in championships under the banner of the Professional Chess Association. Fabiano Caruana, the current world No. 3 and the top American chess grandmaster, won the right today to play for the game’s most coveted prize. He’ll face the reigning world champion, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, in a 12-game, one-on-one match in London in November. It won’t be easy. Carlsen, the current world No. 1, has been champion since 2013 and became a grandmaster when he was 13 years old. He most recently defended his title in 2016 in New York City.Caruana earned his challenge bid by winning the Candidates Tournament, a 14-game tournament featuring eight of the world’s top players, held over the past three weeks in Berlin. For much of the Candidates, Caruana seemed like he might cruise to a relatively painless victory. He notched some early victories and fended off other top rivals with exacting draws. But he stumbled in Game 12, losing to the Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin in 48 moves. That created a formidable and complex thicket at the top of the standings — going into the tournament’s final day, four of the eight grandmasters had a chance to win. But in the 14th and final game, held today, Caruana fought Alexander Grischuk of Russia for 69 moves and over six hours, winning the game and securing the tournament.Caruana has been to the world championships before — but only as a spectator. While Carlsen was winning his championship in New York in 2016, Caruana could be found playing speed chess amid throngs of onlookers at a New York chess club. He told me at the time that he was staying up late at night analyzing the championship games. Now he’ll have a chance to put his analysis to use. It’s been a long road to the championship for Caruana. His family moved to Brooklyn from Miami when he was 4 years old, and he began playing chess at age 5 at a synagogue’s after-school program. Within a few months, he was playing in tournaments around the city. Fischer, whose own family moved to Brooklyn when he was young, learned the game 50 years earlier in an apartment about a mile away from the synagogue.Despite these roots in the U.S., Caruana is one of a couple super-strong players who have transferred to the American team from other countries’ teams. Caruana had been a member of the Italian team, having moved to Europe to take advantage of its strong coaches and tournaments. He rejoined the American team in 2015.But there’s still one steep hill to climb. Caruana and Carlsen have played 31 times before in the lengthy sort of games that will be played at the world championship, according to, a website that collects top players’ games. Carlsen leads their series 9 wins to 5, and there have been 17 draws. A simple simulation of the match2I simulated 100,000 instances of the championship match and its potential tie-breakers, using the players’ live ratings from and assuming a draw rate of 30 percent, similar to what I’ve done before previous world championships. using the players’ current Elo ratings puts Caruana’s chances of upending Carlsen’s reign — and claiming the first American title since Fischer — at about 30 percent. read more
